Geothermal Heating and Cooling in Birmingham, AL
There are a great many different options available when it comes to climate control. In most homes, people tend to have one system for heating and one for cooling. That’s not the only way to do it, though. Heat pumps condense both heating and cooling functions into a single system, which offers a wide range of resulting benefits. Geothermal heating and cooling is one of those heat pump types.
Western Sales & Services, Inc. installs and services a wide range of geothermal heating and cooling systems throughout Birmingham, AL. If you need geothermal heating and cooling services of any kind, give us a call today.

What Is a Geothermal System?
A geothermal system is a heat pump, which means it evaporates and condenses refrigerant to exchange heat between the home and the outside environment. Most heat pumps exchange heat between the home and the air outside, the same way an air conditioner does. A geothermal system, however, uses a subterranean pipe loop buried next to the house at a depth of around 30 feet. At that depth, the temperature remains at a near–constant 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The pipe loop is filled with water, which is cycled through the system during operation.
When in cooling mode, the geothermal system evaporates refrigerant to absorb heat from the air in the home. Then, it vents the heat into the water in the pipe loop. This effectively cools the home in more or less the same way an air conditioner does, just with a different destination for the collected heat. In heating mode, however, the system siphons thermal energy from the water in the pipe loop. Because the temperature of the water never fluctuates much, regardless of the weather above ground, there is a practically endless supply of thermal energy for the system to use.
The Benefits of Installing a Geothermal Climate Control System in Birmingham, AL
There are a multitude of benefits to using a geothermal system. For one thing, with a geothermal system you save a great deal of money and space that would otherwise have to go to a separate unit. This is the primary reason that people tend to install heat pumps. Because a geothermal system doesn’t have to burn fuel to generate heat, it’s automatically more energy efficient than a traditional combustion–based heating system.
What truly makes the geothermal heating and cooling special, though, is its use of geothermal energy. Most heat pumps rely on the outside air for their thermal energy, which means that as the air gets colder and colder they lose energy efficiency. With a geothermal heating and cooling system, that never happens. You will always have more than enough heat to warm your home, no matter how cold it gets outside.
