How Heat Pumps Work

A heat pump is a system that is constructed very similarly to an air conditioner. Two different units are installed in the home, one inside and one outside. The two are connected by power and refrigerant lines. When in cooling mode, the inside unit evaporates refrigerant to absorb thermal energy from the air in the ducts. It then sends the refrigerant gas down the refrigerant line to the unit outside, where it is condensed back into liquid. This releases the collected heat outside of the home. An air conditioner operates pretty much the same way. The main difference between the two of them is that a heat pump contains a part called the reversing valve. This valve is what allows the system to switch back and forth between heating and cooling modes.

When the heat pump is in heating mode, the direction the refrigerant flows through the system is reversed. This causes the system to siphon thermal energy from the air outside and release it inside. Without the reversing valve, a heat pump would more or less be just a normal air conditioner.

The Advantages of Installing a Heat Pump in Your Birmingham Home

A heat pump offers a number of unique advantages. First and foremost, the ability to act as both a heater and an air conditioner means that the heat pump saves a lot of money and space that would otherwise go to a separate system. This is the primary reason that most homeowners choose to install a heat pump. That’s not the only advantage they offer, though.

A heat pump doesn’t have to burn fuel to generate heat, which automatically makes it more energy efficient than combustion–based heating systems. It also means that the system can operate virtually anywhere that electricity is available. This is in contrast to systems like gas furnaces, which require access to additional fuel.

Keep Your Heat Pump in Good Condition with Regular Maintenance

Heat pumps are not harder to keep in good condition than any other system. As long as you follow the two cardinal rules of system maintenance, you’ll be fine. First, be sure to schedule preventive maintenance for your system at least once a year. This allows your HVAC technician to find and fix any developing issues before they have the chance to cause too much damage. You can prevent a great deal of damage over the life of your heat pump by doing this. You should also call for repairs as soon as you notice a problem. The faster we can get to your system, the more damage we can prevent.
