How Ducts Dictate Your Energy Efficiency and Comfort
The ducts are a vital part of centralized forced air climate control systems. Without them, most furnaces and air conditioners wouldn’t be able to do their jobs properly. Ducts are responsible for the delivery of warm or cool air to various destinations throughout the house. The problem is that ducts are also extremely susceptible to duct leaks.
Duct leaks can form for any number of reasons. Minor mistakes made during installation, animal activity, or even years of normal use can all cause small tears to form in the duct walls. Though each individual leak tends to be quite small, it can add up very quickly. The US Department of Energy has estimated that the average forced air system loses up to 30% of its output, thanks to duct leaks. That’s almost a third of the total output you’re paying for going completely to waste while the system is operating. In order to compensate for this loss of output, the systems will have to stay on for longer periods of time. This, of course, ends up costing you more money and making your home less comfortable.
The Benefits of Duct Sealing and Insulation
There are two common methods of preventing energy loss through the ducts: sealing and insulation. Duct sealing involves painting a type of epoxy called mastic into the various leaks in the ducts. Once it dries, mastic is stiff enough to seal the leak but flexible enough to move with the ducts without cracking. Depending on the severity of the leak, the mastic will sometimes be supplemented with regulation duct tape. This is duct tape that contains a metallic layer, making it better able to seal leaks. Normal duct tape is, ironically, not very good for duct sealing.
Duct insulation is a bit different, in that it attempts to prevent output loss through more indirect means. Insulating your ducts is often done to make the entire network more energy efficient, rather than sealing specific problem areas that are contributing to energy loss. If you have your ducts insulated, it will often simply involve wrapping as much of them as possible in thick insulating foam. This is especially useful during winter, when the cold air in uninsulated areas of the home has a tendency to sap the heat from the ducts before it reaches its destination.
