What Is a Sump Pump?
A sump pump is a pump that is designed to protect certain areas of the home against mild to moderate flooding. A pit is dug at the lowest point of the room that needs protecting, so that all water flowing into the room will naturally roll into the pit. This pit is called the sump. The sump pump is then installed either in or directly above the sump, with a pipe running from it outside of the house. As water enters the sump, it will fill up to a certain point. When that target water level is reached, the sump pump will activate and pump all of the water out of the house.
Why You Should Install a Sump Pump in Your Home
As mentioned above, some areas of a home are more susceptible to moderate flooding than others. Basements and crawl spaces are the most vulnerable, as they are already belowground. When heavy rains hit, there is a very real chance that these areas will fill up with water. Even a small amount of water damage can cost thousands of dollars to fix. If an area that contains other expensive systems floods, like a basement with a water heater or furnace, that cost is compounded. Installing a sump pump is a common, and common sense, method to make sure that a little bit of water doesn’t end up causing you a lot of misery. It still won’t be able to do much against major flood waters, but if your entire house is submerged you have other problems to focus on than your basement.
